Roll’s header helps Saints roll past FC Indiana

It was a converted opportunity of revenge.

The Cincinnati Lady Saints missed the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) postseason in 2014 after a 2-2 draw at FC Indiana.

At Angus King Stadium on Friday night, a 12th minute header from forward Lauren Roll guided the Saints past FC Indiana 1-0, keeping the Lady Saints unbeaten in two matches. The loss was the visitor’s first match this season.

The goal came off a corner when midfielder Jen Maslyn swung the ball in for the forward to score the game’s lone goal.

Led by Haitian international Roselord Borgella, who snuck behind Cincinnati’s backline on multiple occasions, FC Indiana generated the best goal scoring opportunities.

But it was goalkeeping from Kara Gudmens and Brianna Alvarado, who combined for six saves to earn the cleansheet. Alvarado replaced Gudmens in the 74th minute following an injury.

FC Indiana outshot the Lady Saints 15-9, with six on target to the home side’s two attempts.

Before the fixture, Shek Borkowski, FC Indiana’s coach who doubles as the Haitian national team coach, said Cincinnati was the best team in the league, in part from experience and the loaded roster. He was right.

The Lady Saints remain unbeaten with a draw and a win in their 2015 schedule. Their next match is May 23 at FC Pride in Indianapolis, Ind.
