It’s more than a match. This isn’t just another fixture in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).

For some players, it’s a chance for redemption, after a last-minute loss in 2014. For others, it’s a firm test against one of the strongest clubs in the league.

The one collective thought is simple—Saturday night’s match against Detroit City FC is one of the biggest matches this season.

“When you talk about rivals, obviously Cleveland’s a good rival,” said Cincinnati Saints coach Dave Wall. “Detroit is equally up there. It’s just straight up Interstate 75.

“They’re an established group and we enjoyed going up there last year. They get a good crowd up there at their place and we get them down here this year, so hopefully we can pick up three points.”

The Saints are undefeated in NPSL matches at Withrow’s Angus King Stadium this season. Their only loss was in the I-71 Cup with AFC Cleveland, which was recorded as a friendly.

“It’s a long season,” Wall said. “But obviously (we’re) looking forward to the weekend here. Spirits are still good. It’s a big weekend for us.”

Before the season even began, Saints captain James Thomas said Detroit City has been the one club he’s been waiting for.

“I’m definitely chomping at the bit to get a shot at Detroit City,” Thomas said. “I think we had three unlucky results at home last season, one being when we gave up a goal late to them that left a bitter taste in our mouths. So I definitely want to get a chance at them.”

The Saints and Detroit City kick off at 7 p.m. The Lady Saints will play Motor City FC at 4 p.m. Both Detroit sides lead their respective leagues, the NPSL and the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL).

“You try to approach every game and try to pick up points,” Wall said. “Saturday is no different. As afar as the atmosphere, it would be great if we had a big crowd and support this team.”
