Saints fall in final league match
July 20th, 2015
Charlie Hatch
The Cincinnati Saints closed their 2015 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) campaign with a 2-1 defeat to the Indiana Fire on Saturday night at Withrow’s Angus King Stadium.
Despite the close score line, it was a match the home side was never really in control of.
The Saints’ goal came in stoppage time when midfielder Phil Hagerty converted a penalty. Hagerty was the team’s leading scorer, finishing the year with seven goals.
After a scoreless first half, the visitors took the lead in the 47th minute when Bennett Kim sent Saints’ goalkeeper Dan Williams the wrong way on a penalty. The Fire then scored a second goal in the 86th minute courtesy of Steven Bush, who turned the team’s finely-strung passes into finessed shot past Williams.
With league play complete, the Saints have one more match this summer. They’ll host Columbus Crew SC’s college program next Saturday at 7 p.m. That match will be Cincinnati’s final one at Withrow High School.
